The
Shoe Story
Don't let the benign little house that provides a home to
Atomic City fool you—inside you'll find a den of quirky
delights. Although they no longer sell Doc Martens (and
therein lies a wonderful tale in itself of small shop
keepers standing up to corporate suit types), you'll find
pleasures and treasures guaranteed to please those living
the lifestyle of the creative and alternative. Specialty
posters, as well as cards to tickle the fancy of the
receiver. Manic Panic hair dye is here for those who
desire a little more color in their lives. Pin-up Naughty
Girl That We Love To Love, the one and only Bettie Page,
has her own worshipful section with T-shirts, clocks and
other ephemera for her faithful followers.
Toys, Toys, Toys
And most charming of all, take the time to look at the
wonderful assemblage of toys at Atomic City—especially
the tin wind up toys from Europe and Asia that are a
delight for all ages. |

The
Scene
As far as malls go, this North Austin one is bright,
innovatively designed and not too big if you don't feel
like going on a huge hike while shopping. But it's still
full of the stores you crave.
The Goods
Anchored by Foley's, JCPenney and Dillard's (separate
men's and women's branches), Highland Mall serves the
needs and desires of almost anyone. For the fashion plate:
Ann Taylor, Chico's, Jessica McClintock, Johnston &
Murphy, J. Crew, Jarman and Avenue. For the kids, there's
the Disney Store, Gymboree and KB Toys. The fitness-minded
will appreciate options like American Eagle Outfitters,
Champs Sports and General Nutrition Center. The Body Shop,
Victoria's Secret, Crabtree & Evelyn and Franklin
Covey are among many other offerings. Godiva and Lamme's
will satisfy your sweet tooth, and the food court on the
second level will serve your belly. |

What's
in Store
With a large space, great merchandise (including lots of
furniture) and a warm staff, Limbo is one of the best
vintage bets in town. Curiosities and oddities for the
body and home hide around every corner of the
well-organized racks and displays.
For Your Home
One of Limbo's quirky highlights is its fun collection of
burlesque home decor. Been looking for a whiskey pour
spout inspired by the female form or a set of '50s
housewife nudie pics? It's all here, but try not to get
too distracted, otherwise you might miss the veritable
museum of home furniture. With selections spanning the
last 50 years, the rear third of the store displays
everything from placemats to loveseats.
The Clothing
Men's and women's clothes and accessories in good
condition fill up the rest of the place, and that's not
even starting into the knickknacks. |

The
Goods
Whether you're old money, nouveau riche or just wishing
you were some kind of riche, there's a bargain to be
found. Clothing for men, women and children can be
purchased at a fraction of its original cost—look for
designer apparel by Givenchy, Ellen Tracy, DKNY, Oleg
Cassini, Dana Buchman, and Oscar de la Renta, as well as
that famous Neiman Marcus label. And the longer an item is
on the sales floor at Last Call, the more of a discount it
receives, with some items going for up to 75 percent off
the original price.
Till You Drop
Jewelry, belts, gloves, purses, scarves, ties and hats are
some of the accessories that Last Call carries, as well as
great bargains in shoes and boots by top designers. The
lingerie and sleepwear department has fantastic discounts
on everything from dishy diaphanous numbers to cuddly
cotton sleepers. |

The
Scene
Upon entering Keepers, the salespeople introduce
themselves--your first clue that this is not your average
men's shop. The second clue is either the price tags or
the tape measure draped around the necks of all the
workers. There's a lot of custom tailoring going on here.
If you're in search of a three-pack of men's T-shirts,
you're out of luck. Individually sold, these clothes are
not for the fashion fearful or for the faint of wallet.
The Goods
Designer labels, including Joseph Abboud and Ermenegildo
Zegna, are top sellers at Keepers, where Austin's elite
meet to shop. Much of what you'll buy at the store can be
custom fit, including a full line of fabulous suits. Check
out the linen suit available in a variety of colors; in
classic white, it will surely make the beholder long for a
tall, cool drink on the bow of a long, lean ship. |

"Yes" reads the neon sign at Emeralds'

and the endless color-coded racks of clothing may
overwhelm the less intrepid shopper.
The Goods
Look for eclectic mix-and-match dresses, shirts and skirts
from XOXO, Betsey Johnson, Bisou Bisou, Susana Monaco and
Michael Stars, among others. Don't be surprised to find a
$50 shirt next to a $250 dress. Glass display cases are
stocked with hair baubles, watches, bracelets and
necklaces. Emeralds also sells cards; candles; frames and
gifts, including ceramic and metal crosses; and addictive
bath and body products. |
