The climate in this region can be surprising. In 1998, for
instance, Austin was hit by climatic chaos, first with weeks of
record-high temperatures (hitting 90 degrees Fahrenheit, or 33
degrees Celsius and over), followed by a break in the drought in
October when tornadoes and severe flooding wrought extensive
damage throughout the region. However, Austin usually enjoys a
pleasant semi-tropical climate. May through to September is the
rainiest, most humid period, but even in August the heat is less
severe than elsewhere in the state. Fall and spring are the best
times to visit. Winter temperatures usually drop no lower than 38
degrees Fahrenheit (four degrees Celsius).
